Group C favourites Charlie Smith High School will kick off their ISSA Manning Cup season away to Haile Selassie High School in one of five matches scheduled in the urban area competition this afternoon.

In other Group C games, Edith Dalton James High oppose Bridgeport High and Tivoli High take on Vauxhall High.

In the lone Group A game, Waterford High entertain Meadowbrook High while Cumberland High face Jose Marti High in a Group F match. All matches start at 3.30 p.m.

Charlie Smith made it to the semi-finals of the competition last season before going out to Jamaica College, and the Arnett Gardens-based school has retained the majority of last year’s squad.

Coach Eugene Williams says they have prepared well and he is anticipating a positive start to their campaign.

“At the beginning of a season, you always want to start positive. So we are looking to start off on the front foot and get a positive result,” he told The Gleaner.

The veteran coach noted that, although they do not have the experience of playing Haile Selassie before and are a bit unsure of what to expect from their opponents, he remains confident in their preparation and he says they are prepared to get the best out of this game and the competition.

“We have never played against Haile Selassie but we are going out there expecting to do our best, but it all depends on the players and their overall performances.

“The first step is to get out of the zone and see where we can go from there. But the guys are in good stead and they are ready for the occasion,” he said.
