Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls cruised to a 74-36 win over St Vincent and Grenadines in their opening game of the Americas World Cup qualification at the National Indoor Sports Centre earlier tonight.

Jamaica led their opponents 18-8 after the first quarter and 42-15 by half time, going on to run away with the third quarter 19-10 to to take a 37-point lead (61-24).

The Sunshine Girls would then take their foot off the gas in the final quarter but still came away with the biggest margin of victory on the opening day of the tournament.

Jamaica’s coach Connie Francis said it was a great display by the young bunch of players, led by experienced captain Jhaniele Fowler.

"I thought this young bunch with six debutants got the exposure we need to grow our young players in order to make our final preparations for Cape Town (Netball World Cup).

"It is a young team and we commend them for the effort. It is just to recognise when teams come up with tactical changes and stick with our game plan and push forward to get more points on the board," she said.

St Vincent coach Godfrey Harry said despite the loss, he was pleased.

"Jamaica has already qualified. It was a tough game but we are satisfied with the outcome," he said.

In the other late game, the United States upstaged Antigua and Barbuda 34-22.

Jamaica will face the United States in their second game tomorrow.
