Knibbs to play on at LAAC after making the cut

William Knibbs was a relieved man after finding out late that he was one of the top 54 players who will contest the remaining rounds following day two action at the Latin America Amateur Championships under way in Puerto Rico yesterday.
After carding a two over par two 74 to go with his opening round one over par 73, Knibbs finished tied for 49th place following his three over par total of 147.
As was his strategy from day one, the Jamaican avoided very few mistakes and shot even par on the front nine and had just two bogies on the back nine to finish two over.
It was welcome news for Knibbs who had failed to make the cut on two previous attempts.
“Making the cut is amazing. That was my goal coming into the event. Now that I have made the cut I won’t settle on that and I want to play as well as I can and move forward. It just feels great accomplishing a major milestone.”
Knibbs teammate Justin Burrowes will take no further part in the tournament as a second straight five over par round 77 sees him with a plus 10 total of 154.
After making the cut last year, Burrowes was disappointed that he will not be getting to play with his teammate.
“This week was just not my week and it really exposed my weakness. I played a bit better on the second day but there not much to be said other than there is work to be done.”
In the meantime, Knibbs will have some Caribbean company heading into today’s third round, with Trinidadian Chris Richards Jr, Bahamian Richard Gibson Jr, Barbadian Simon Proverbs, St Lucian Yadhu Urs, Haitian Jean Phillipe Mehu and the Cayman Islands trio of Justin Hasting and the Jarvis brothers, Andrew and defending champion Aaron, making the cut.
Mexican Luis Carrera is the new leader following his 10 under par total of 134. Argentine Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira is second with none under par 135 with Peru’s Julian Perico third with eight under par 136.
