Nkrumie, Cole go fast at Youngster Goldsmith

BOUWAHJGIE NKRUMIE and Serena Cole turned on the speed at the Youngster Goldsmith track meet at the National Stadium yesterday.

Kingston College’s (KC’s)captain, Nkrumie, running in the Boys’ Class One 100 metres, showed he is in good shape after strutting to 10.30 seconds in heat five, setting one of a number of meet records on the day.

Nkrumie’s teammate Emmanu Rwotomiya was second in 10.57, while St Jago’s Raheem Pinnock’s 10.65 was good enough for third.

Edwin Allen High School’s Cole was nippy as well, clocking 11.57 in the Girls’ Class One 100, also setting a meet record, with teammates Tonie Ann Forbes (12.11) and Trezequet Toyloy (12.13), earning the runner-up spots.

“Today, I wanted to run a faster time than I did some weeks ago at JC but the wind was very heavy. I am still okay, however, as I finished injury-free,” said Cole.

St Elizabeth Technical High School’s Shamer Blake continued his good form this season in hurdle events, winning the Boys’ Class One 110-metre hurdles in 13.66 seconds.

Blake, who had earlier finished second in the Class One 400-metre hurdles, staved off a strong challenge from Jamaica College’s (JC’s) Daniel Beckford, who was second in 13.79. KC’s Amantoe Wray was third in 13.88.

Pre-race favourite, Demario Prince of St Jago High, a finalist in the event at last summer’s World Under-20 Championships, failed to report for the final after his 13.76-second qualifier proved the quickest of the day.

Calabar High School’s Shaquane Gordon was impressive in winning the Boys’ Class Two 110-metre hurdles in a swift 13.27 seconds. The KC duo of Daniel Carby (13.51) and Daniel Clarke (13.78) finished second and third, respectively.

In the Class Three 100-metre hurdles, St Jago’s Marquas Page was best after winning in 13.61 seconds. Janaica Pecco of Calabar was second in 13.96 seconds, while Timothy Purrier of KC was third in 14.16.

FORBES WIN 100 HURDLES

Edwin Allen had a good day with Tonie Ann Forbes winning the Class One 100m hurdles in 14.39 seconds. Petersfield High School’s Alexis James, the World Under-20 silver medallist, was absent from the final after advancing as the fastest qualifier.

Edwin Alllen finished second and third in classes four and three, respectively.

In Class Four, Georgië Barrocks was second in 11.45 and Shanique Bartley third in 11.50 seconds, as Ayana Blake of Immaculate Conception won in 11.21 seconds.

In Class Three, Angel Robinson (11.85) and Arihana Brown (11.96) were second and third, respectively, as Akaylah Ellis of St Catherine won in 11.57 seconds.

It was a quinella for St Jago in the Class Two 100-metre hurdles, as Bryana Davidson won in 13.73 seconds ahead of Briana Campbell, second in 13.92 seconds. Anoi Kentish of Convent of Mercy (Alpha) took third in 14.16 seconds.

The Edwin Allen duo of Bryan Levell and Delano Kennedy were both impressive in the 400 metres, winning their heats in 48.05 and 48.07 seconds. KC’s Amol Glasgow ended third with 48.17.

Excelsior came out on top in classes two and three.

In Class Two, Demarco Bennett won in 50.79 seconds, ahead of Nickeo Bramwell of Calabar (51.27).

In Class Three, Gregory Marlane won in 53.22 seconds, ahead of Eshanee Porter of KC, who was second in 53.41 seconds.

Earlier, the meet started on a bright note following two record runs in the Boys’ 400-metres hurdles.

In the class two event, JC’s Deandre Gayle produced the first record on the day, stopping the clock at 54.49 seconds.

Raquel Reid of Calabar finished second, also inside the old mark of 54.79 seconds with 54.57, while his teammate Junior Gallimore was third in 55.19.

KC’s Antonio Forbes stopped the Class One Boys’ clock at 52.40 seconds as St Jago’s Jahene Ball took third in 53.17 seconds.

In the Girls’ Open 400-metre hurdles, Edwin Allen’s Tony Ann Beckford clocked one minute 00.27 seconds (1:00.27) to finish ahead of Holmwood Technical High School’s Andice Brady (1:00,61) and Tiklya Bennett of Excelsior (1:01.08).
