ST GEORGE’S, Grenada (CMC):

WINDWARD ISLANDS Volcanoes have appointed little-known South African Russel Sissing to be their interim head coach.

This follows the sacking of Barbadian Shirley Clarke, the father of ambidextrous Barbados and West Indies all-rounder Kyle Mayers, after only one year in the job.

Chairman of the Windward Islands Cricket Board (WICB), Dr Kishore Shallow, the vice-president of Cricket West Indies, said the dismissal was due to the team’s lack of performance.

“I can confirm that we have separated from Mr Clarke,” Shallow said in an interview with media.

“The board thought that we were not necessarily on the same wavelength. Given the investments that were made, we were not getting the results.”

Shallow said the separation was amicable, but Windwards board were not satisfied after the Volcanoes won only two matches, both against the Combined Campuses & Colleges, in the West Indies Super50 Cup, and failed to win any of their last seven first-class matches.

Volcanoes are fourth in the West Indies Championship standings on 19.4 points – behind Guyana Harpy Eagles (28.6 points), Barbados Pride (23), and Trinidad & Tobago Red Force (20.6) – after the first two rounds.

The performance has been highlighted by Kimani Melius hitting a hundred in the first-round match against Red Force, and Alick Athanaze following up with a hundred in the second-round contest against Harpy Eagles.
