From the pitch to the pulpit

FORMER Jamaica international Darren Mattocks has called time on his playing career to focus on his faith in Christ and to become a pastor. The forward, who made his debut for the senior team back in 2012, has a total of 50 appearances while scoring 18 goals. Mattocks has revealed that he felt the calling of God in his life while plying his trade in the United Soccer League (USL) for Phoenix Rising.

“It came to a point where every day I was reading the Bible, praying, worshipping along with fasting and that was when I knew I completely changed my life, not because I changed, but the Holy Spirit convinced me to change,” Mattocks stated.

The 32-year-old Mattocks, who was known for his skilful play while featuring for Bridgeport High in the urban Manning Cup competition, last played for the national team back in 2019 and played his last club game for Phoenix Rising in 2021. He stated that he’s aware of the ridicule he might face but is a firm believer and he hopes that this mission will help lead others to Christ.

“What I’m doing now, people might not agree or believe but what I’m doing is to open their eyes to other things, and bring them to the knowledge of Christ and help them understand who Christ is and what Christ wants for us,” he added.

Steadfast on his mission to Christ, Mattock revealed that he’s at peace with himself following his decision and has found a greater joy in his new found faith, rather than netting goals for the national team. Mattocks, who has also launched a GoFundMe page to assist with the purchase of church equipment, said that missing out on income from the sport of football isn’t something that he’s worried about.

“I find joy in that (Christ), even more than scoring a hat trick for Jamaica. I don’t worry about money, so I’m in good hands. If I’m being led in this way maybe two months later God might say I’m going to give you two more years in football, and I promise you, He will tell me,” he added.
