Gripping contest unfolding between Kingston, UWI

FORMER NATIONAL youth player Raewin Senior snared five wickets for The University of the West Indies (UWI). However, Andre Bailey and Kirk McKenzie both hit half-centuries for Kingston Cricket Club following day one action in the second round of the Jamaica Cricket Association Senior Cup yesterday.

At stumps, UWI were 67 for one, replying to Kingston’s 261 all out. Kashawn Beale stroked 41 off 69 balls for the students, who had Senior to thank for dismissing the Tigers for 261. Senior sent down 14.1 overs and bagged five for 62 while David Bird chipped in with three wickets for 45 runs.

National opener McKenzie stroked 57 from 76 balls with Bailey top-scoring for Kingston with 64 from 84 balls.

Elsewhere, national player Tevin Gilzene stroked 114 to lead the Jamaica Defence Force to 234 for six declared against Portland, who were first dismissed for 71 and then were reeling at 23 for three in their second innings.

EARLY DAMAGE

The army men did the early damage with the ball with Leighton Leslie picking up four wickets for 33 runs and national fast bowler Gordon Bryan also getting four wickets for 15 runs. Leslie then returned to bag two more wickets in Portland’s second time at the crease. Earlier, Ranjay Hill took four wickets for 64 runs for Portland while Atoy Newell got two wickets.

Meanwhile, captain Javelle Glenn stroked 114 for Melbourne CC, who posted 242 for seven, replying to Kingston and St Andrew’s (KSACA) first innings score of 132.

Sadique Henry contributed 48 and national captain Paul Palmer Jr, 38, for Melbourne against Sadike Greenland’s three wickets for 38 runs for KSACA.

Shalome Parnell was the main destroyer for Melbourne with the ball, bagging five wickets for 26 runs against Albert Rose who made 70 for the KSACA team. Batting a second time, KSACA were 67 for one.

Police posted 211 all out against Kensington CC, who were in turn dismissed for 117. Maurice Harrow made 80 for the lawmen with national pacer Ojay Shields bagging four wickets for 41 runs and Ryan Francis also claiming four wickets.

Janoi Sappleton then took three wickets for 10 runs to restrict Kensington. Denneil Griffiths top-scored with 25.

St Catherine Cricket Association closed on 204 all out, this after restricting St Mary for 180. Ramone Francis led the batting charge for St Catherine CA with 75 against six wickets for 53 runs by Damian Walker. Michael Bedward took four wickets for 43 runs to restrict St Mary as Hanchard Hamilton replied with a top score of 62.
