BY HIS standards, Kingston College’s Bouwahjgie Nkrumie says that his confidence in executing an ideal 100-metre is high after storming to victory in the under-20 boys’ final on the second day of the Carifta Trials yesterday at the National Stadium.

Nkrumie clocked 10.18 seconds for victory, finishing ahead of reigning Carifta Games champion DeAndre Daley, who finished in 10.37. Hector Benjamin of Jamaica College was third in 10.46.

Nkrumie said that the time was a surprise to him given the conditions and the strength of his opponents, especially considering the way he won his first round on Friday in 10.19, shutting down over the last 20m.

“The objective of the whole Trials was to just win. I didn’t expect to run that fast, especially yesterday given the type of conditions and opponents. But the confidence is increasing,” Nkrumie said.

That confidence, Nkrumie explained, has come in large part because of the improvements he has made in the latter part of his race, something he said was missing last season when he finished second to Daley at Carifta.

Edwin Allen’s Serena Cole made a statement two weeks before the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships, prevailing in the under-20 girls’ final, clocking a nippy 11.18, to finish ahead of Hydel’s Alana Reid, 11.24. Petersfield’s Alexis James was third in 11.44.

The under-17 girls’ final was a one-two finish for Wolmer’s Girls as Natrece East won in 11.86, with teammate Tianna Marshall, finishing behind her in 11.87. Shemonique Hazel of Hydel was third in 11.95.

TODD ON TOP

Tramaine Todd of St Elizabeth Technical won the under-17 title in 10.58 with Khamani Gordon of Calabar ending second in 10.78. Nathaniel Martin of Jamaica College was third in 10.85.

Meanwhile, Holmwood Technical’s Rickiann Russell continued her fine season, winning the under-20 girls’ 400m title in 52.43. Edwin Allen’s Kacian Powell was second in 53.26, while Hydel’s Abigail Campbell was third in 53.64.

Reigning Carfita Games champion Delano Kennedy used a reprieve from the starter’s gun to win the under-20 400m final in 46.25. Jasuana Dennis of St Elizabeth Technical High was second in 46.80 while Tyreese Ebanks of Green Island was third in 47.86. Kennedy shuffled inside the blocks when the starter told the athletes to stand up but was not given a false-start penalty.

Hydel High’s Jody-Ann Daley won the under-17 400m girls’ title in 54.18 with Holmwood Technical’s Rosalee Gallimore ending second in 54.48 and Breana Brown of Excelsior High, third in 54.55.

St Mary Technical’s Kenrick Sharpe won the under-17 boys’ crown in 48.78 while Nickecoy Bramwell of Calabar High was second in 48.90 and Omarie Williamson of Holmwood Technical, third in 49.35

In the field, Cedricka Williams captured the girls’ under-20 discus title in a season’s best 55.25 metres.

Abigail Martin of St Jago was second with 53.59 and Britannia Johnson, third with 48.68.

Jamaica College’s Chavez Penn won the under-20 boys’ high jump title with a leap of 1.95 metres. Penn finished ahead of Antwan Salmon of Titchfield High, 1.90, and Adrian Rumble of Jamaica College, also with 1.90.
