Walsh brace, late penalty help Portmore oust Arnett
TWO GOALS from striker Chevaughn Walsh carried Portmore United to a narrow 3-2 win over Arnett Gardens in the feature round-of-16 game in the Lynk Cup Knock Out competition at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.
In a game that saw both teams fielding a number of their younger squad players, Portmore settled first and got the opener in the 10th minute through Walsh.
The burly striker was on hand at the near post to flick home an Emelio Rousseau left-sided cross to give the Phillip Williams-coached side a deserved lead.
Urged on by their fans, Arnett Gardens got into their groove and started to press a bit more, and it was from that pressure that they would get the equaliser in the 33rd minute through a thunderbolt of a strike from Marlon Martin from some 23 yards out.
The teams went into the half at a goal apiece, however, Arnett Gardens started the second half the same as they finished, using snappy passes and good wing play to put Portmore under pressure.
The width created from those wingers eventually opened up the Portmore backline, the visitors conceding a second goal in the 62nd minute when substitute Kevaon McGregor’s long-range strike flew past Mark Roberts in the Portmore goal.
It took the combination of Lamar Walker and Alex Marshall to bring Portmore back into the game, with the pair working their magic in the 77th minute.
Marshall initially found Walker on the right side, who went down the flank and floated in a right-footed cross, which Marshall met with his head to level the score.
Portmore’s coach then rang in some changes by bringing on some of his young Turks, who would eventually decide the game late on.
Substitute Shakeon Satchwell single-handily won a penalty in stoppage time after he was brought down by Roshawn Amos inside the area.
Walsh then stepped up in time added on to convert the penalty, sealing the contest and sending Portmore into the quarterfinals.
