Hind’s big half-century rescues Red Force, Harpy Eagles in trouble

TERRANCE HINDS showed the class of a genuine all-rounder as his big half-century knock helped propel the Trinidad & Tobago Red Force to a formidable 302 against the Jamaica Scorpions on day one of their final-round West Indies Championship encounter at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad yesterday.
Hinds, batting at number eight, scored a brilliant 94 to help rescue the Red Force innings, which at one stage, was in tatters at 119 for seven.
The right-hander faced 121 balls and hit 10 fours and three sixes, sharing in two crucial partnerships to breathe some life into the Red Force innings.
He first put on 66 runs for the eighth wicket with spinner Bryan Charles, who contributed just nine runs.
Hinds then added 100 runs for the ninth wicket with pacer Anderson Phillip, who scored his maiden first-class half-century when he got to 63.
Hinds would be the ninth wicket to fall as he was trapped in front by pacer Ojay Shields, who ended with two wickets for 72 runs.
Earlier, Tion Webster and wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva put on 71 runs in a fifth-wicket partnership, with da Silva getting 39 before he became the second of three wickets for Derval Green, who, in the process, snared his 100th first-class scalp.
Webster made 30 before he fell to Marquino Mindley, who also claimed two wickets.
GAME WILL RESUME ON FIVE FOR ONE
Left-arm spinner Jeavor Royal, who was drafted into the side, also picked up two wickets. The Scorpions had also handed a debut to batsman Brad Barnes who could get a knock on today’s second day as the Scorpions will resume on five for one with opener Tevin Gilzene going bowled by Anderson Phillip for just one.
The Scorpions trail by 297 runs.
Elsewhere, the Barbados Pride will resume on 48 without loss, replying to the Windward Islands Volcanoes first-innings score of 237 to trail by 189 runs.
Sheyne Moseley will resume on 26, and with him is Zachary McCaskie on 21.
Earlier, in-form captain Alick Athanaze hit a top score of 59 in the Volcanoes total, with Tevyn Walcott getting 55. Ryan John chipped in with 41 against five wickets for pacer Akeem Jordan and two wickets each for Roshon Primus and Jomel Warrican.
Over at Providence in Guyana, The Leeward Islands Hurricanes have already secured first-innings honours from the Guyana Harpy Eagles.
The Hurricanes will resume today on 133 for five, replying to 122 posted by the Harpy Eagles.
Wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton will resume on 35 while opener Kieran Powell made 39 as left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul has so far taken two wickets for 31 runs.
Earlier, off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall continued his wicket-taking spree, bagging four wickets for 27 runs to restrict the Harpy Eagles.
Javier Spence and Colin Archibald also took two wickets each.
