#Carifta2023 | Smooth sailing for Jamaica in 400s

Jamaica's Rickiann Russell and defending Carfita Games under-20 400m champion Delano Kennedy ensured their passages to the finals of the 400m at the 50th Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas, this morning.

Russell, who won the Class One title at last week's ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships, booked her spot in the final, winning her semi-final heat in 53.88 seconds, the second-fastest qualifier in the field.

Kacian Powell also advanced to the final, clocking 54.75. Javonya Valcourt has the fastest time among the finalists with 53.88.

Meanwhile, Kennedy won his semi-final heat in 47.74, qualifying with the third-fastest time in the field. Kennedy’s teammate, Jasauna Dennis, had the fastest time in qualifying, winning his sem-final in 47.44.

Among the under-17 girls, Jody Ann Daley and Rosalee Galimore qualified for the final, clocking the fastest (55.41) and third fastest (56.03) times respectively among the finalists. De'Cheynelle Thomas of St Kitts and Nevis (55.72) is the other top qualifier.

Among the under-17 boys, Nickecoy Bramwell qualified for the final with the fastest time, clocking 49.81. His teammate Kendrick Sharpe also progressed to the final, with 50.31, the third fastest time among the finalists. Zion Shepherd of the Bahamas is the other top qualifier.

The finals are set for 5:55 p.m.
