Ayre expects great competition at East Coast meet
BALTIMORE, Maryland
FANS ATTENDING tomorrow’s second staging of the East Coast International Showcase in Landover, Maryland are set to have a treat as some of the top juniors from Jamaica will go head to head with their United States counterparts and meet organiser Sanjay Ayre is very excited.
Ayre in an exclusive interview with The Gleaner spoke about his expectations of the meet.
“Everything is running on schedule as all the athletes are here. They started arriving last Sunday and the last batch of athletes flew in yesterday. They have been training every day since they arrived and all have acclimatised well. There will be beautiful weather on Saturday and we are going to have amazing performances from the athletes,” Ayre said.
According to Ayre, all the sprint races are stacked with top athletes.
“We wanted to have head-to-head clashes in the sprints and I went out and got some of the top high-school athletes here from Jamaica and the United States and the athletes are eager to see what they can do at the meet,” he said.
According to Ayre he wanted the fans to see something special in the United States.“I wanted the fans to see a product they have never seen before in the United States. I made sure I brought together fantastic fields especially in the sprints races where we will see USA versus Jamaica and I am very confident after this year’s staging the meet will be a staple on the calendar for the future,” said Ayre who represented Jamaica at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics Games.
