DEFENDING champions Jamaica had to settle for third place at the recently concluded Full Bore Shooting Championships held at the Crabbs Range in Antigua and Barbuda. Guyana took the title in impressive fashion, finishing on a total of 1,119 points followed by hosts Antigua and Barbuda in second with 1,028 points and Jamaica rounding off the top three positions by securing a total of 1,028 points.

Nicola Guy, who had a very good championships, topped the table for the Jamaicans while finishing 10th overall in the Individual event. In the process, she was named the 2023 winner of the Amazon Trophy, which is awarded to the highest-scoring female shooter in the Individuals, where male and female shooters compete against each other.

Guy stated that despite the tough shooting conditions in Antigua, she was pleased to walk away with the Amazon Trophy while adding that competing against shooters such as Guyana’s Lennox Brathwaite and Jamaica’s John Nelson gave her a “a great feeling”.’

“Antigua has been a very unique experience for me because of all the places that I’ve shot before. Antigua by far has the trickiest conditions in terms of the wind. Things were up and down for me early as I had mixed results, some banks were bad, especially the 500 yards, but I really picked up over time and ultimately won the Amazon Trophy. It’s a great feeling when you’re competing with the greats like Lennox Brathwaite and Major John Nelson to finish 10th overall and emerge as the number-one female,” she stated.

Guy added that getting her first hold on the Amazon Trophy would be a motivational factor as she now takes aim at copping the Grand Aggregate Trophy, which is awarded to the shooter who registers the highest total score in the Individual Event.

“I’m happy that I could have been of service to my country. There’s more to come, and I’m aiming to be the top Aggregate winner for the next competition, which will be held in Guyana later this year,” Guy said.
