The inclusion of former Reggae Girlz captain Konya Plummer in the FIFA Women’s World Cup squad came as a surprise to many as the defender was out of competitive football for more than two years.

Plummer, who came back after having a baby and is yet to return to competitive football, is one of the most experienced players in the squad and believes the ability to adjust and improvise will be key at the tournament and she does not believe in giving up.

The 25-year-old, who led the Reggae Girlz to their historic appearance in France in 2019, says the team has to approach this tournament much different from their initial visit. She believes they have learnt a lot since 2019 and that the team expects to put in a stronger performance at this World Cup.

“We must have a different mindset. The last one wasn’t what we wanted but this year we have no choice but to make it what we want and do our best.

“We are working on our strengths and getting to know our weaknesses. So having the camp in Amsterdam helped to prepare us and I think we are ready to hit the field,” she said.

“As a team we are just looking to go and play our game, and whatever happens on the field we just have to adjust and keep on moving,” she said.

Yesterday head coach Lorne Donaldson revealed that he had not finalised his starting 11 for the opening game against France, and Plummer would love to be in the starting team to face France on Sunday. The former captain wants to do well in the World Cup which is being hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

“The thing that motivates me the most is the fact that I had a baby and I am coming back after a tough year and I have got the opportunity to represent Jamaica in the World Cup (again),” Plummer said.
