#WWC2023 | Jamaica stun Brazil, make first World Cup knockout round
A stunning defensive performance from the Reggae Girlz has, again, given them a notch in the history column.
The Reggae Girlz are through to the round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, becoming the first Caribbean nation to do so, after a dogged, but organisationally sound 0-0 draw against Brazil in Melbourne earlier this morning.
In a game of very few chances, the Reggae Girlz snuffed out the threats Brazil offered to end Group F on five points, two behind leaders France, who got by Panama 6-3.
Jamaica did not have much of the ball, ending with 28 per cent possession, while Brazil had 55 per cent.
For a little over 15 minutes of the 90, possession was in contention, and the Jamaicans won those battles to restrict the Brazillians, to remain one of only three teams along with Switzerland and Japan not to concede in the tournament.
Not surprisingly, the player-of-the-match went to Jamaican goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer.
The result also meant disaster for Brazil, who were knocked out at the first-round stage for the first time in more than 25 years.
