#BudaQuest |Clarke smashes world junior record, Hyde misses 400mh final
Debutant Roshawn Clarke smashed the World Under-20 record on his way to qualifying for the final of the 400-metre hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary earlier today.
Clarke, running in semi-final heat three, against World Champion Noway’s Karsten Warholm, clocked 47.34 seconds to grab the second automatic qualification spot.
Unfazed, Clarke went to the lead over the first 250 metres but was overtaken with just over 100 metres to go.
Warholm won in a quick 47.09, while Clarke had to fight off the attention of the United States’ Trevor Bassitt, who ran a personal best, 47.38 to qualify as one of the quickest non-automatic qualifiers.
Speaking of non-automatic qualifiers, Clarke’s teammate, Jaheel Hyde, was fourth in heat one after clocking 48.49 and was ousted from the non-automatic spots.
The heat was won by the British Virgin Islands’ Kyron McMaster in 47.72.
Brazil's Alison dos Santos, 47.38, and the United States Rai Benjamin, 47.24 are also through to the final.
