Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock registered the biggest long jump in the world this year as he got his World Athletics Championships campaign off and running inside the National Athletics Centre.

Pinnock, who leaped to 8.54 metres with his very first effort in the long jump preliminary round, will have teammates Carey McLeod and Tajay Gayle in the long jump final.

McLeod also used just one attempt to get into the final, leaping out to 8.19 metres, surpassing the 8.15 automatic qualification mark.

Things were a little more tricky for Gayle who completed having three Jamaicans in a World Championships long jump final for the first time in the country’s history.

For Gayle, qualification did not come until the end of qualifying and came down to his very last jump, where he leaped out to 8.12 metres.

While Pinnock’s mark leads the world, McLeod has the fourth longest jump of the qualifiers and Gayle made the cut from eighth place.

The long jump final takes place tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.
