THERE’S A saying in racing: Weight stops trains.

Well, one of racing’s oldest adages was again proven yesterday, local mare SHE’S MY DESTINY slamming the brake on a seemingly runaway train, United States-bred RUNAWAY ALGO, derailing the American’s bid for a fourth straight grade-one victory.

Carrying 126lb, asked to allow SHE’S MY DESTINY 25lb – claiming rider Ramon Nepare taking the handicappers’ 104lb down to 99lb – RUNAWAY ALGO put on a brave face for the first four of six furlongs in the None Such Sprint, chasing the five-year-old mare into the lane.

However, when champion trainer Jason DaCosta’s SHE’S MY DESTINY changed gears under the flyweight impost, RUNAWAY ALGO had no response for her half-mile split of 45.3, left toiling in a 10-length loss behind the local-bred, who clocked a smart 1:11.1 for her fourth win this season and 12th career victory.

Despite being humbled at the scale, RUNAWAY ALGO stayed on for second, five and a quarter lengths clear of GOD OF LOVE, an overnight/open-allowance floater thrown in among grade-one runners.

Champion jockey Dane Dawkins rode two winners in his pursuit of leader Reyan Lewis, who failed to bother the weigh-in scale with five mounts on the day, remaining on 77 wins, but still 16 clear of Dawkins.

Peter-John Parsard notched a second consecutive two-timer, having taken over his father Ian Parsard’s barn since acquiring his trainer’s licence.

The young Parsard opened and closed the nine-race card with four-year-old maiden NEO STAR and speedy BOOTYLICIOUS, who made amends for her astounding August 26 nightpan loss to MILOS, bringing down the curtains in 59.3 at five furlongs round.

Racing continues this afternoon with another nine-race programme.
