Cohen double keeps Denbigh perfect

A DOUBLE strike from in-form attacker Dunsting Cohen carried Denbigh High to a 5-0 beating of Central High in their Zone L ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup encounter at Efforville yesterday.

Cohen’s brace now sees him move to 11 goals from two games as Denbigh handed another hiding to Central, who are coming off a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Glenmuir High.

Glenmuir continues to lead Zone L following the 16-0 mauling of Porus High, with the Andrew Peart-coached side now three wins from as many games while scoring a league-leading 25 goals.

Denbigh High are right on their heels with two wins in as many games with an impressive 23 goals without conceding to boot.

For top striker Cohen, the win and the goals were important for his team, which he says, is on a mission.

“It was a good performance by myself and the team and we think that if we keep our focus and take it one game at a time, we believe we can manage to challenge for this cup.”

With coach Jermaine Douglas absent from the Central bench due to personal reasons, assistant coach Adrian Reeves laments what has been a torrid start for last year’s finalist.

“This is our second loss with a similar scoreline. That means defensively we are not doing enough. Last year it was the same thing that happened, we lost two games and managed to come through the zone, so there is nothing that says we can’t do the same this year.”

Meanwhile, there were big wins for Green Island and former champions Rusea’s, who blanked Merlene Ottey 5-0. Green Island went one better as they hit Cambridge for six.

The win for Rusea’s sees them maintain their perfect three form three record and stay top of Zone B with Green Island in third place following their first win.

Elsewhere, former champions Cornwall College secured their second win in three games as they defeated Green Pond 3-1. The win sees Cornwall College atop Zone A with seven points, one ahead of second-place Maldon High, who got the better of Spot Valley, 4-3.

In other games, Bellefield secured their second win of the campaign after tagging Holmwood 2-0, while Enid Bennett turned back Ewarton 3-0.
