Jamaica Surfing Champs set to thrill at Makka Surfing Beach

In what should be a thrilling end to the year, the Jamaica Surfing Championship is set to make waves at the iconic Makka Surfing Beach in South Haven, Yallahs, St Thomas today.

This eagerly anticipated event will feature top-tier athletes competing in the Men’s and Women’s Open, Longboard, and Masters Open categories. The stage is set for a fierce battle between the nation’s best surfers, promising an unforgettable day of high-stakes competition against the backdrop of Makka’s renowned waves.

The men’s division is poised for an intense clash as the top-ranked surfers, Elsihama Beckford and Icah Wilmot, prepare to face the challenges posed by the formidable third-ranked Javaun Brown out of Portland and the dynamic fourth-ranked Ronald Hastings.

Jamaica Surfing Association (JSA) President Inilek Wilmot expressed his excitement about the upcoming event. “We are looking forward to a great event as we strive to re-establish our national championships as a flagship event for the JSA. Makka has been an amazing and very important venue for us. It has world-class waves, the community has been good to us, and it’s a great venue for spectators. We are proud that surfing can shine a spotlight on the parish of St Thomas.”

The women’s competition promises equal excitement, featuring a showdown between the number-one ranked Imani Wilmot, Gabrielle Chung and Aaliyah Alkateeb. With skilful and dynamic performances expected from these top-tier female surfers, the battle for supremacy in the Women’s Open category will undoubtedly captivate spectators and leave an indelible mark on the surfing community.

Icah Wilmot, one of the star contenders in the men’s division, shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming championship. “Really excited to get out there and compete. The waves are going to be fun all day, and everyone is surfing so well. It’s going to be an amazing show of high-calibre surfing, and I’m just looking to put my best out there and go for the gold.”
