Following his departure from his role as head coach at Molynes United, Alex Thomas has found a new lease on life in the KFC-sponsored Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League.

Thomas is in charge of early title contenders Slingerz FC, who are second in the league on 18 points, level with league leaders Guyana Defence Force, who boast a superior goal difference.

Under his guidance, Slingerz have a perfect record in the league with six wins from as many games, scoring 29 goals while conceding three.

Thomas said he has been well received in Guyana since being appointed head coach at Slingerz, and despite his short time with his new team, work has been done to spread his football philosophy among the players.

“I arrived just a week before the competition started, and the welcome has been great from the management, the supporters, the fans, and everybody really. I had to put my foot on the ground as quick as possible and tried to understand the players and trying to put a philosophy in place as quick as possible.

“The players have adapted quite well, and it’s a blessing. We’ve started off quite well. Right now we’re six from six so as a team we just have to stay focused,” Thomas said.

For Thomas, the move from Jamaica to Guyana felt like ‘God’s timing’ following his departure from Molynes United in the Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL).

While he declined going into detail regarding how the move came about, Thomas said he is committed to his time at Slingerz.

He said he has not closed the door on the possibility of a long-term post with the Guyanese outfit.

“It can be long term or it can be short term, but for now, I’m focusing on the job at hand,” he said. “I don’t know after that time where life can take you. I could still be here in Guyana, and being here in Guyana would be great for right now, but I’m committed to the task. After that, me and management can have that talk.”

Thomas’ next assignment will be against seventh-place Den Amstel FC on Saturday as he seeks to continue their perfect record in the GFF Elite League.
