Immaculate create first shock of schoolgirl netball season

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION High School created the first shock of the season in the ISSA Urban Schoolgirl Netball competition, surprising defending under-16 champions The Queen’s School 18-12 in their Zone A encounter on Friday.

After winning their opening game a week ago against Excelsior, a revved-up Immaculate got off to a fast start, led by goal shooter Dionna Phipps and returning under-16 goal attack Carletta Wilson and wing attack Davena Ulett.

The Terrence Peart-coached team rushed to a healthy 10-2 first-quarter lead. Only two points would be eroded over the next three quarters.

Peart indicated surprise at his team’s win.

“It was a big win for the team as we did not expect this easy win as Queen’s were the best under-16 schoolgirl team in the island last year. This means a lot for the girls going forward, and hopefully, we can finish in the top two to advance to the next round,” said Peart, who is looking forward to his team’s matchup against unbeaten St Hughes at home on October 30.

In another Zone A game, Excelsior bounced back from their defeat to Immaculate with an easy 23-11 win over Ardenne.

In Zone B, Jonathan Grant dismissed Waterford High 40-0 while Norman Manley turned back Cedar Grove 26-13. In Zone C, Campion stopped Holy Childhood 30-11.

In under-19 action, Queen’s defeated Immaculate 26-8 while in a Zone C game, Greater Portmore dismissed Holy Trinity 36-1.
