AFTER REGISTERING back-to-back Jamaica Premier League (JPL) defeats, newcomers Chapelton Maroons turned things around with a 2-0 victory over parish rivals Humble Lion at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex yesterday.

Chapelton got their goals courtesy of Damari Deacon in the 36th minute and Gawain Austin in the 46th.

Still, it was Humble Lion who looked more likely in the opening salvos, veteran striker Andre Clennon coming close in the seventh minute, his header hitting the post.

However, the Oneil Thompson-coached Chapelton grew slowly into the game, a cracking volley from Deacon, courtesy of a sumptuous Andrew Vanzie cross the result.

Deacon’s volley was followed by defender Austin’s guided header on the stroke of halftime that left Humble Lion’s custodian, Peter Harrison, hapless.

In the 56th minute, Humble Lion, through Kemar Beckford, were gifted an opportunity to pull one back, but his shot from close range went over the bar. Chapelton would continue their offensive push with Deacon’s left-footed shot in the 61st, which initially seemed goal bound, soaring over the bar.

In fact, Deacon was dangerous all night.

Close to the end, the attacker skilfully made his way past several defenders, only to put his resulting effort wide.

Thompson explained that it was a pleasing sight to see the team perform exactly the way they prepared for the encounter.

“It’s very pleasing when you can execute the things you do on the training ground against a quality team. I’m proud of the guys, and I just want us to continue on this path and see how far we can go in the league. We stuck to the principles of how we train, and whenever it comes out on the field of play, it looks beautiful,” he said.

Donovan Duckie, head coach of Humble Lion, explained that he wasn’t pleased with the way the team played, especially in the first half.

“I’m absolutely disappointed. This is a coach’s nightmare. In the first half we just didn’t play. We were non-existent as only one team played, so full compliments to Chapelton Maroons. We’ll now go back to the training field and get ready for our next fixture,” said Duckie.
