FIRST-HALF GOALS from Devor Wynter in the 42nd and LaShawn Barnaby in the 45th gave Denbigh High a 2-0 win over Alphansus Davis in their Ben Francis first-round knockout match at Brooks Park yesterday.

After dominating the majority of the first half, Denbigh took the lead with three minutes to go in the half.

Playing on the right flank, Alvarado Fearon completed the first of two assists. Receiving a ball from Odaine Thompson, he dribbled away from two defenders to find Wynter on the edge of the 18-yard box, the attacker making no mistake with a ferocious strike.

On the stroke of half-time, Fearon completed his brace of assists when he made a similar run down the right flank to find Barnaby, this time inside the six-yard box. Barnaby was just as sincere as Wynter in banging home his 18th goal of the season.

Denbigh continued their dominance in the second half and got several opportunities to add to their tally, but were wasteful.

Opportunities for Alphansus Davis were few. Devon Higgins and Nicardo Ennis did get looks at goal but saw those chances snuffed out by Denbigh captain Marlon Murray at centre half.

Denbigh coach, Garfield Carney, was pleased but had some concerns.

“It was a good win to start our knockout campaign and we are in the next round. However, I am a bit disappointed as we missed too many chances which could have given us some momentum going into the next round,” said Carney.

Despite his team’s defeat, Alphansus Davis coach Tafari Burton, in his first year at the helm, was pleased with his team’s performance this season.

“Disappointed, I am not, but I am not happy with a loss. Nobody gave the team a chance to reach this stage of the competition, and I am proud of the guys, as this is good exposure and experience for them going forward,” he said.
