Rural schoolgirl netball semi-final spots up for grabs

THE HUNT for semi-final spots in the ISSA Rural Schoolgirl Netball Competition will be on today at GC Foster College with the quarterfinals of the junior and senior competition beginning at 10 a.m., with the former taking the court first.

When junior action gets under,way, all eyes will be on the Denbigh versus Manchester High and the Holmwood Technical against Glenmuir games.

All four teams were expected to have been in the semi-finals, but early meetings were created by second-round defeats.

Glenmuir were beaten 32-14 by Titchfield, and Mile Gully defeated defending champions Manchester 20-16.

Last year’s beaten finalists, Holmwood and Denbigh, who lost in the semi-finals to Manchester, have been in impressive form all season and are poised to get the better of their opponents and advanced to Friday’s semi-finals slated for the same venue.

Mile Gully will take on Iona, and Titchfield will go up against May Day in the other quarterfinal matches.

The big four, defending champions Holmwood Technical, Denbigh, Manchester, and last year’s beaten finalists Glenmuir all look set to advance to the semi-finals in senior action.

Following impressive results in the second round, scoring over 100 goals twice, Holmwood are big favourites and should easily get by Dinthill Technical at 11:00 a.m.

Oozing with confidence

Holmwood coach Carline Graham-Powell s is oozing with confidence ahead of today’s encounter.

“I am happy for my opponents because without them there would not be a competition, however, we are well prepared, and I have no doubt that we will win our matches tomorrow,” said Graham-Powell.

Denbigh will take on Maggotty at 1 p.m., and Manchester will do battle with Morant Bay at 11 a.m.

Glenmuir, the only one among the big four to have lost a game this season when they were beaten by Denbigh in first-round action have been in impeccable form since.

They will go up against Mt Alvernia at 1 p.m. and should take care of business.
