St Jago’s Achau steals show at Wesley Powell Benjamin meet

St Jago High School’s Bryan Achau unleashed a devastating run in the boys’ 5000 metres at the opening track and field on the JAAA’s 2025 calendar, the Wesley Powell Benjamin meet, at Excelsior High School yesterday.
The Kenya-born athlete led from start to finish, dominating a very strong field that included four other Africa-born athletes from Kingston College (KC).
Achau lapped most of the runners, clocking a fast 15 minutes, 40.78 seconds for the win.
The KC duo of Peter Njugona and Chris Wanjiku was second and third, respectively, in 16:29.61 and 16:52.95.
Achau, who was a spectator at last year’s ISSA Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships, was very pleased with his performance.
“I am not surprised with the win and fast time, as I do have a good programme and I knew I was going to do well. This is good, as it is just the start of the season and I am hoping to have a great season,” said the Davaon Spence-coached athlete.
In female action, St Jago’s Breanna Brown delighted her home fans after posting the fastest time in the 300 metres to win the Class Two event in 42.56 seconds, finishing ahead of the Wolmer’s Girls’ duo of Kasyian Powell, 42.83, and Aaliah Bell, 43.53.
Abigail Wolfe, of Wolmer’s, stole the show in Class One, winning in 42.74, just ahead of Shakira Rhoden and Roneisha Johnson of Excelsior in 42.77 and 43.26, respectively.
Excelsior’s athletes swept the top-three spots in the boys’ Class One 300m, with Daniel Wright leading the way in 35.71. Demar Bennett was second in 36.20, while Riquelme Reid took third in 36.32.
Deandre Myers of Wolmer’s was best in Class Two among the males, winning in 37.80 seconds, ahead of Michael Graham of Excelsior, 37.75, and Thomas Daley of Cornwall College, who clocked 37.76 for third.
