Boosted by his first hat-trick in the Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL), Molynes United midfielder Devone Davis said he has a point to prove as he targets double-figure goals and assists this season.

Davis opened his account with three goals as Molynes thumped Vere Phoenix 5-0 in Sunday’s JPL encounter at the Wembley Centre of Excellence.

The result saw Molynes moving out of the relegation zone as they climbed from the bottom of the table up to 11th place with 13 points tallied.

Davis was a delighted figure after the match as he said the goal haul was a boost to his and the team’s confidence for the season ahead.

“It is a great feeling, and it was a good performance from myself and the team out there. I love that performance, and the hat-trick really built my confidence and our momentum right now,” he stated.

Davis is aiming to hit double figures in goals and assists as he feels he has a point to prove.

The player, who is nicknamed Messi by his teammates, is one of the schoolboy football players that head coach Jermaine Thomas had introduced to bolster their squad ahead of the season.

“I’m taking it game by game so far. My goal is to get a lot of goals and assists. I am aiming for at least 10 goals and 12 assists for this season,” the midfielder insisted.

Speaking on his player’s quality, Thomas said the inclusion of Davis and other schoolboy players would be a major boost for Molynes’ motivation on the pitch as the youngsters will work hard to cement their spots among their senior teammates.

“The motivation level from these youngsters is going to be greater, that much I can tell you,” Thomas had told The Gleaner after the conclusion of the schoolboy football competitions earlier this month.

“They are going to have a lot more reasons to play and they are going to work harder because they do have a statement to make. As a result of that, I think they will be willing to cover a lot more ground. So coming in, they will add a lot to us in a positive way and I’m really looking forward to them contributing to the team.”

Davis believes having the trust of his coach has played a major role in his success on and off the field.

The duo are more than familiar with each other as Davis was a key member of McGrath High’s daCosta team, which is coached by Thomas. McGrath made it to the final of the daCosta Cup this year as well as winning the Ben Francis Cup knockout title last season.

“He always had confidence in me,” Davis affirmed. “He is the one that built me because from an early age, he’s the coach that I’ve always been around. He knows exactly what I am capable of ,so he will always have that belief in me, and it really helps.”

Molynes’ next assignment will see them facing Harbour View FC on Sunday in match week 16 action of the JPL.
