Fast times, records highlight R Danny Williams meet
A number of athletes delivered record performances at yesterday’s 31st staging of the Purewater/R. Danny Williams/Jamaica College (JC) Development Meet at Ashenheim Stadium, JC.
The star of the meet, however, was Muschett High School’s Class Two sprinter, Shanoya Douglas, who showed her range over two days of running.
As she did on Friday while running the 200m at the Sprint Fest 200 metres meeting, Douglas delivered an impressive double on Saturday in the girls’ Class Two 100- and 400-metre events.
Douglas clocked 54.56 seconds to win the 400m, then returned later to capture the 100m in 11.56 seconds. Despite posting the fastest time of the day in the 100m, Douglas was not satisfied.
“I am very disappointed with myself as I really wanted to run much faster,” she said.
“Winning the 200m on Friday and with two more wins today show that my preparation is going well for the season. I want to do well for my coach and loyal supporters,” said Douglas, the World Under-20 200m bronze medallist.
Hydel High’s Aaliyah Mullings produced the first record of the day, clocking a personal best and meet record of 58.78 seconds to take the girls’ Open 400m hurdles, finishing ahead of teammate Natassia Fletcher, second in 1:00.13, and Shevaughn Thomas of Vere Technical, who clocked 1:01.29.
Rhiana Scott of Ferncourt High and Danae Bartley of Vere Technical were also in record-breaking form yesterday. Scott won the Class Three 100m in 11.94 seconds ahead of Shayon Smith of Vere Technical, 12.12, and Tashana Godfrey of Edwin Allen High, 12.28
Pantry claimed the Class Four sprint in 12.39 seconds.
Impressive 800m win
Monique Stewart of Edwin Allen also stood out with an impressive win in the Class One 800m. Stewart looked quite relaxed, winning the event in 2:16.09 ahead of Hydel’s Abigail Campbell, 2:19.20, and Hannah Charles of The Queen’s School, 2:19.24.
Among the males, St Jago High’s Class Three athlete Khieme Campbell was the standout performer of the day. Known more as a quarter-miler, Campbell delivered an impressive time in the boys’ 800m, stopping the clock at 2:02.39. Kingston College’s Kenyan athlete Julius Itubo finished second in 2:02.82, with Alcardo Campbell of Wolmer’s Boys third in 2:17.13.
In the Class Two 400m hurdles, Vere Technical’s Shawn Palmer blazed to victory in 54.66 seconds ahead of Jamaica Pecco of Calabar High, 54.96, and his teammate Micah St. Michael Lewis, 55.58.
In the Class One 400m hurdles, Robert Miller of Calabar High delivered a personal best and meet record of 51.88 seconds. Princewell Martin of Jamaica College also clocked a personal best, finishing second in 51.98 seconds, with third place going to Brandon Harris of St Jago High in 52.39.
