Wise Women's Club hosts sixth annual Fun Day fundraiser
WESTERN BUREAU:
It was a fun-filled family affair at Sunday's staging of the Wise Women's Club of Montego Bay's sixth annual Country Fun Day fundraiser, to raise funds for scholarships for tertiary-level students attending the Montego Bay Community College (MBCC).
The event was held on the grounds of Hilton's Farm, St Leonard's, Westmoreland, and saw both past and present beneficiaries of the club's benevolent efforts in attendance.
"The fundraising is to send our students to MBCC, and we have eight students at the moment who are doing tertiary-level studies at the college," founding member of the Wise Women's Club, Denise Dear, told Western Focus.
"This is our sixth hosting of this Fun Day, and we have been doing the scholarship programme for more than 10 years, and we have had over 60 students graduating from the programme," Dear added.
GOOD FOOD, GOOD MUSIC
There was a wide array of foods, including honey, cakes and other pastries, prepared by residents of the community and entities such as the Girl Guides of Montego Bay, who had mounted display booths on the grounds of the venue. Those in attendance were also treated to a cooked lunch and a musical atmosphere.
"Every year when we have this event, we invite the Girl Guides of Montego Bay to come in and sell their pastries and cakes to earn some money for the Girl Guides. Also, the people that live in the area, they come in and sell their produce, and they also benefit from the Fun Day," Dear explained.
Holly Housen, owner of the Coffee n CrËme CafÈ in Montego Bay and a newly-installed member of the Wise Women's Club, lauded the event as a positive means by which tertiary-level students can access and pursue higher education.
"Being a part of the Fun Day is a wonderful experience, because it contributes so much to young people in their scholarship endeavours," Housen said. "The ambience is so social and family-oriented, and everyone seems to be having a great time and it is like a family reunion."
