NWA undertakes $8 milllion road-patching programme in Trelawny

The National Works Agency (NWA) is undertaking a multimillion-dollar Hot Mix Patching Programme along several roadways in the parish of Trelawny.

According to Community Relations Officer for the NWA's Western Region Janel Ricketts the programme targets approximately 3,600 square metres of roadway and will cost approximately $8 million.

"Among the areas that will receive attention are sections of the Albert Town to Troy main road, and the stretch of roadway between Falmouth and Springvale," she said.

"The programme will target the worst-affected sections of these roadways. This latest effort by the NWA is being funded through the Tourism Enhancement Fund and the Road Maintenance Fund," Ricketts said.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

Hot Mix Patching is part of the NWA's routine maintenance programme. It involves the paving of roads with Hot Mix Asphalt,which is a combination of sand stone or gravel bound together by asphalt cement. The method is used to extend the lifetime of roads and streets that are showing signs of ageing, oxidation, or minor surface disintegration.

In his 2016 Sectoral Presentation, Minister of State for Works in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation Everald Warmington said that his ministry had set out to intensify the rate at which routine maintenance activities were executed on the main road network by the NWA.

At the time, he said that the ministry would be spending approximately $1.1 billion through the Road Maintenance Fund to conduct works islandwide, some of which would go towards Hot Mix Patching.
