MANDEVILLE, MANCHESTER:

A security guard, believed to be in his early fifties, died in the Mandeville Hospital after he was shot by gunmen on Monday during a daring hold-up of a gas station in the heart of the town.

Reports are that about 7:45 p.m., two gunmen men entered the premises of the Sandyman PetCom gas station on Main Street, a short distance from the Mandeville police station and courthouse, demanding money.

They became impatient when their demand was not met quickly enough, and opened fire on the security guard, before relieving him of his firearm. Detective Inspector George Williams of the Mandeville CIB, who was conducting business in a nearby store, challenged the gunmen, who fired at him. It is suspected one of the gunmen may have been shot.

The men escaped empty-handed in a waiting green Honda CRV. This is the second person killed by gunmen during a robbery in the parish since the start of the year.

The police are withholding the name of the security guard until the notification of his family.
