Samuda to open Sectoral Debate

MINISTER OF Industry, Investment and Commerce Karl Samuda will today open the annual Sectoral Debate in Parliament.

Samuda, one of three speakers scheduled to participate in the Debate today, is expected to outline the administration's efforts to create new jobs through additional support for the small and micro-enterprise sectors.

The senior government minister is also expected to update his colleagues on the multibillion-dollar Caymanas Special Enterprise Zone project.

The project, announced last year, will be sited on 1,000 acres of prime real estate at Ferry in St Catherine.

Natalie Neita-Headley, opposition whip and spokesperson on the public service, will make her presentation to the Debate at a time when The Government and a number of public-sector groups have been engaged in an intense stand-off over wage-related issues.

Government backbencher and attorney-at-law Ernest Smith is also scheduled to make his contribution to the Debate.

During the Sectoral Debate, government ministers use the parliamentary platform to outline the administration's plans for various sectors, while the Opposition often presents its own proposals.

The theme for this year's debate is 'Positioning for Growth'.
