Best place for vegetable-peanut soup
Many Jamaicans love a cup of soup on the go, especially during long trips when they step from their vehicles to stretch their legs.
Oral Powell and his brother Wayne, get high ratings when they cater to that particular need with their unique vegetable peanut corn soup.
The shop, laden with fruits and pots, can't be missed while heading down the winding mountainous decline of Spur Tree in Manchester.
The tasty meatless soup is made with a combination of cubed vegetables, whole peanut grains and of course, cobs of corn.
"The idea of the peanut soup came about from the corn. The corn has one of the most distinctive flavours," explained Oral. He noted that the nutty flavour of the peanut complements the creamy flavour of the corn. Price range from $80 to $140.
Boiled corn cobs are another favourite of the weary traveller.
"It doesn't matter what area you're in, whatever religion, everybody will have a corn," said Oral. He estimates that 80 per cent of his customers request the soup and corn.
But the Powells' are not short on offerings at their Eglington shop. Peanut porridge is sold right through the day, as well as roast yam and salt fish.
