Appleton Estate All Jamaica Grill-off 2010

Published:Thursday | June 3, 2010 | 12:00 AM

The sauces are simmering, the meats are marinating and the air is buzzing with excitement as patrons anxiously await this year's Appleton Estate All Jamaica Grill-off to be held Saturday, June 5 at Hope Gardens.

This year marks the fourth staging of this event and has gained a devoted following of grill-hungry patrons. With the buzz that was generated last year, particularly with the Jo-Jo's Jerk Pit & More's successful performance in Kansas City, United States of America, this year should be the grill-off's biggest yet.

The competition last year was intense and hard-fought right down to the wire with patrons enjoying every second as the contestants spared no sauce, spice or garnish in their quest to win the coveted title of King Of the Grill. This year, 20 seasoned grilling competitors will be showing off their skills in four different food categories: chicken, seafood, beef and pork.

Increased intensity

Craig Powell, director of the All Jamaica Grill-Off, said that last year's competition was extremely close and intense and he expects it to go up a few notches this year as there is much on the line.

He also said that the event has received tremendous support from sponsors as they have come on-board in a big way.

"The invaluable input of that which we have received from our sponsors has been key to ensuring the success of this year's event."

The competitors and their booths will be the centre of attention throughout the day, providing unlimited food sampling to patrons all day. Patrons will also enjoy choice selections prepared by Caribbean Passions, Reggae Jamming and Rainforest Seafoods as well as tidbits and treats in the Keebler Kiddies Korner. The Kiddie's Korner will also feature entertainment such as the mechanical bull, bounce-about, plus face painting and many other fun activities for the young and the young at heart.

Patrons will also be able to enjoy $150 drink specials all day, thanks to Appleton Estate.

This event offers the entire family a day out to enjoy an abundance of food served straight off the grill for only $2,000 per adult and $1,000 for patrons under 16 years of age, while children under seven enter free. Gates open at noon and there is a limited number of tickets available.

Parking will be available at Jamaica College and a shuttle service will be available throughout the day to transport patrons to and from the venue.
