Mother's is more popularly known for patties, but what some may not know is that they have been making ice cream for the past 28 years.

Jeanette Lewis, marketing manager of Mother's, said that as a part of its summer promotion, the team is conducting sampling of its flavours islandwide. She said most people are unaware that Mother's sells ice cream, let alone makes it. As such, the promotion is being used as a means of introducing people to the tasty treat.

Today, Mother's menu is nothing like it was when the restaurant was established in 1981. Over the years, more delectable items have been added. Lewis explains that apart from a delicious jerked chicken or patty meal, customers can enjoy great desserts as well.

"Our ice cream, sundaes and creamy milk shakes are the perfect treat to beat the heat during the hot summer months," she said.

Currently, the fast-food chain has 15 yummy ice-cream flavours to choose from, with rum and raisins and grapenut being the favourites. However, Lewis said customers can tickle their tastebuds with unique flavours such as chocolate rum and calypso rum as well.

She told Food in a recent visit to The Gleaner that Mother's ice cream is made with love by the skilful hands of Oraine Lewis, who has been working with the company for the past 10 years. He began in the patty-production area but, as fate would have it, these days he's the ice-cream man.

Lewis said about six years ago, Oraine was called in by one of the managers to fill in for someone in the ice-cream production area. Ever since, he has become fond of the process and now ice cream has become a major part of his life.

"Every day I have to think ice cream. No matter where I am, ice cream is always on my mind because I have to keep focused on making the best-tasting ice cream for our customers," Oraine explained.

He said he loves what he does and he loves being in the food industry. For him, there's nowhere else he'd rather be.

Comments on Mother's ice cream:

1. I am not a lover of eggnog, but this flavour is really good. I was very surprised! I do believe I would buy it.

2. I had the pineapple ice cream. It was very tasty and quite smooth.

3. I had the pleasure of tasting the calypso ice cream. It was quite flavourful and smooth.

4. I had the strawberry swirl and the Mother's stout ice cream and they were good.

5. Wicked eggnog! Don't care for the calypso; cherry has good flavour; pistachio is so-so.

6. The chocolate is not bad, but it could have had a bit more chocolate flavour.

7. Chocolate rum and raisins-flavoured ice cream taste like regular chocolate ice cream with little whites (rum). I love raisins in any of my ice-cream choices and that makes this flavour the one for me. I enjoyed it.

8. The pralines 'n' cream is just right; not too sweet, nice flavour.

9. The cookies 'n' cream was divine, as usual!

10. The calypso rum ice cream was quite nice - only had a hint of rum though. I will actually purchase this flavour. Rather loved the blend of flavours in calypso. It actually tasted like ice cream and not just merely milk powder!

Patty comments

1. Wicked fish patty!

2. The crust is light, which I like. Not sure about the flavour of the beef. It's unique; let's leave it at that.

3. The flavour is all right, but they have to do something about the crust. Too dry and you have to chew too much.

4. The fish patty tastes like salt fish. I think it is a bit overpowering.

5. The beef patty has too much salt. I've never tasted a salted patty before now.

6. Tried the chicken patty. Very nice.

7. I had the power patty and it tasted like the beef patty. The chicken patty was good.

8. Soy patty didn't have a distinct taste which I could clearly state, but it can pass for me. I will need to try it more before I can give a final comment. Otherwise, I will stick to the chicken.

9. The fish patty tasted a lot better than I had anticipated. However, adding a little hot sauce or pepper to the mixture would have made it a killer!
