With the faint sound of clamouring bells, green and red decorations glistening like jewels in the sunlight and the alluring scent of mixed spices, there is no mistaking the joy that usually comes but once a year.

It is bundled with goodwill, good cheers and good times sprinkled with hugs, love and kisses and knotted with families and friends. 'Tis the season to be jolly, they say - It's Christmas time!

As the celebration is just around the corner, people are everywhere; with things to do, buying only the few things that they really need and, as a result, they are overspending. Therefore, it is important that we, as consumers, do not get caught up in the 'Christmas craze'. In fact, we must become as vigilant as thieves when it comes to our purses and wallets so as to save money and prevent stress.

Here are a few useful tips to consider in helping you along the way:

1. Make a Budget

Work out how much money you have available to spend and stick to it. Take into consideration all the people you will be purchasing gifts for and allocate a price range in which you wish to stay; this amount may differ from person to person. Once you have your budget in mind, make sure you remember it and keep track of your spending as you begin your early Christmas shopping so you know when you are approaching the limit.

2. Make a list

Another way to save money this Christmas is to prepare a list before you begin your shopping. Write down all the items you will need during the season to avoid impulse shopping and overspending. You can make a note of all the ingredients needed for baking, for gifts, for family members and friends, as well as all the items needed for the Christmas party. Always take this checklist with you when you go shopping so that you will know exactly what you need to buy and you will be less likely to forget anything. Making a list will help you stick to your budget.

3. look for Sales and discounts

Nobody wants to spend more money than they have to. Therefore, you can save money by taking advantage of opportunities such as advertisements announcing holiday sales or brochures detailing product discounts. Check local stores, as sometimes information is posted inside that will help you to save a few dollars. Another way you can save money is to shop online. Many persons find this to be an easy way to compare prices from different shops before making a purchase.

4. Take a friend

Take someone with you when you go shopping. The idea of having someone 'tagging along' is to help you choose from various options whenever you feel confused, or to assure you that what you are purchasing is worthwhile.

Additionally, they can help you to carry the things you have bought and help you stick to your budget. Besides, it is also fun to shop with others so go out and have a good time.

Hopefully, these few tips will help you to start your Christmas shopping early, saving money in the process, and avoid the hassle of last-minute shopping.
