Jamaica must seize health-tourism opportunities

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I believe that as a major player in the tourism industry, Jamaica's strengths need to be fortified and enhanced.

As a Jamerican spa consultant who just completed her 33rd visit to the island, I find that Jamaicans, overall, have an effortless charm which translates well for customer service. Not so with the numerous spa treatments I have received.

Right now, 2011-12 vacations are trending towards health and wellness. Spa resorts and hotels are well positioned if the critical skill sets of your technicians are world class.

You are competing for business globally now and basic knowledge is not good enough. Social media can quickly change a hotel or island from hot to not. A tweet to 10,000 'friends' can be critical, depending upon the message. Enlisting the services of others in the diaspora who love Jamaica should be a consideration.

I am, etc.,
