Jamaicans are not garbage!

Published:Wednesday | January 12, 2011 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

How long will the Jamaican masses continue to allow government officials to treat our fellow citizens as if they are garbage, all in attempts to garner the almighty US dollar? The article titled 'Ministry to forcibly remove squatters from dump', published on Friday, January 7, said the minister of water and housing planned to force 114 families from lands adjacent to the new Falmouth Port.

I do not condone squatting; nevertheless, under no circumstance should Jamaican officials sweep away entire families as if they were disposables. Minister, how do you sleep at nights knowing this relocation that you have sanctioned is to an area lacking basic amenities, such as electricity and water?

Are these families not worth at least one-tenth of the efforts being placed on the Falmouth Port to facilitate foreigners?

Prime Minister Golding declared that his administration would provide low-income housing, yet we still await this project with bated breath.

Too long we have looked outside our shores for the revitalisation of our economy. It is high time we rethink our national priorities and invest in our own people.

We are tired of officials selling out our own for a dollar. Stop sweeping us to the wayside. We are not garbage!

I am, etc.,
