Should cops not chase crooks?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I read with interest an article on a deadly police chase. I've lived abroad for many years and the police chasing errant motorists is not uncommon.

Unfortunately, this can end in fatal accidents. But if we are saying the police should give up when the chase is in excess of the speed limit, certainly this is a signal for criminals to merely exceed the speed limit in their bid to escape justice. Incidentally, it is commonplace for motorists - especially public passenger vehicles - to travel well in excess of the legal limit.
