Mad at Customs

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I'm one disgruntled parent. My 17-year-old daughter arrived at Norman Manley International Airport on February 12, and she was ecstatic to return home as she hasn't been back since 2001.

During checks at Customs, she was asked her if the two suitcases she was carrying were hers, and she replied yes but that a few items - mind you, worn stuff - belonged to her aunt who had left them in the United States. My daughter was taking them home for her.

Customs ended up charging my daughter J$8,300 on the basis that "she's an unaccompanied minor and she's not allowed to take anything for anyone". How can you charge a 17-year-old almost US$100? Situations like this make us not want to return home.

I am so angry right now with Customs. They need to look within themselves and make better judgements and not chase us away from where we are from originally.

I am, etc.,
