COMMISSIONER OF Customs, Danville Walker, says the police are now trying to determine if a local importer was behind the illegal removal of six barrels from the ports on Thursday.

Two security guards employed to the port have already been taken into custody after the barrels were found at the importer's home in Palmers Cross, Clarendon, during a joint operation between the police and the Customs Department.

A third man, who investigators believe was the driver of the vehicle that transported the barrels, was being questioned by the police.

According to the Customs Department, the barrels, which contained commercial items, were detained after the importer refused to pay the additional duties they were assessed.

The barrels were later discovered missing and a search was launched.
