SAJ recognises staff bravery

The Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ) has awarded four members of its portworker staff for acts of bravery in saving the life of a colleague.

The four - Leroy Bartley, Alworth Bennett, Onardo Fowler and Dwight Lewis - were among a group of port workers working at the Kingston Container Terminal (KCT) on June 21, when a staff member of KCT, Arun Graham, fell from a vessel into the Kingston Harbour.

The men, without hesitation, raised an alarm and ran to the assistance of Graham, forming part of the rescue team that saved his life.

The SAJ specially recognised the men during the opening of the association's recruiting centre last Wednesday.



Onardo Fowler: Also an apprentice, rendered active assistance by pulling the rope to get Arun to shore.


Leroy Bartley: An apprentice with the SAJ, saw when Arun fell into the sea and raised an alarm. He was the first to act by lowering the ship's rope ladder immediately.


Dwight Lewis: A stevedore. He was the first to climb down the ship's rope ladder and stood on the last rung with one foot on the buffer and caught Arun's wrists and tied a rope around them.


Alworth Bennett: A specialist worker with the SAJ. He was the second person to descend the ship's rope ladder and supported Lewis by holding on to him while he tied the rope around Arun's wrists.He also spoke encouraging words to Arun telling him not to give up.
