Dr Sandra Nesbeth, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) proposed candidate for North West St Catherine, was yesterday dragged before the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on tax evasion charges.

It was revealed in court that Nesbeth, a medical doctor who operates in Linstead, St Catherine, owes about $250,000 in taxes.

She was taken before Senior Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green after failing to appear before the court previously. She was granted bail in the sum of $50,000 in her own surety.

It was revealed that the breach was committed over a 12-month period. She has made previous appearances and has paid over a sum of the money.

Nesbeth spent approximately one hour in the holding area after she was taken to the court on a warrant of disobedience.

Attorney-at-law Courtney Maxwell represented Nesbeth during her appearance.

He told the court that it was not his client's intention to be disrespectful to the court and that a miscalculation of the date had occurred.

She is to return to court on January 23, 2012.
