Condom claims on firm ground

Published:Tuesday | June 11, 2013 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Congratulations to Jaevion Nelson on his article in The Gleaner of Thursday, June 6, 2013 titled 'Condoms aren't aphrodisiacs'.

Mr Nelson reassures us that there are still people who live in Jamaica. His article speaks of adolescents as they are, not as others think they should be, or what adults, parents, guardians and teachers would like them to be. He has the best grasp of the real situation.

Allow me to quote from the article for those who did not have the pleasure reading it:

1 "Condoms are not aphrodisiacs; they Do NOT encourage sexual activity."

2 "Their distribution/availability/ accessibility have no bearing on our hormones, irrespective of age."

3 "We must develop a multifaceted strategy to encourage the delay of sexual activity, and proper use of condoms. That is by no means endorsing early sexual activity! It is recognising that if adolescents won't abstain, we must encourage them to be responsible."

What a bright young man, Mr Nelson is. Please continue to write; you give me hope.
