Summer water safety crucial

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I wish to commend the police on the eight safety tips given on Page A3 of The Gleaner, July 9, 2013. I note that all eight deal with security, and not safety. Let me add another significant safety point.

As a parent, grandparent and ex-army soldier (who can swim), I think it MOST important that we ensure, ALL the time (not just in summer), that all water-based-activities be supervised/controlled/managed by adults, competent in swimming.

Remember, we are surrounded by water, with many rivers and swimming pools, and in the midst of having fun, tragedy can strike.
