How free is education?

Published:Friday | July 12, 2013 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I have always thought that Jamaica was very modern in its concept of a person's right to education. The Government provides a 'free' public primary and secondary system. You can make the choice if you wish to attend the 'paid' system.

This year, my siblings and I have chosen to assist a child to enter high school as our annual community-service project.

I was in complete shock when I was informed about the required fees. Entry to a public high school would require approximately $50,000. This included many fees to the school, books and uniforms.

I would like the Ministry of Education to think about the numbers of students who do not enter high schools or enter without the requisite items because they cannot afford it.

Over to you, Mr Minister.
