Anderson takes title, Summerbell satisfied with year

Although he did not win any of the major prizes at the Heroes of Speed race meet held at the Dover Raceway, St Ann, last Monday, Caribbean champion driver, David Summerbell, has more than one reason to celebrate.

First, his Total Lubricant teammate, Andre Anderson, gave another dazzling performance to cement his first lien on the national circuit racing title. Anderson also won the Modified Production Class 3 Championship.

Secondly Summerbell's daughter, Samantha, was crowned the Bracket 32 Champion and, based on the points standings, she is the top female performer and could also snatch the Rookie of the Year title.

Thirdly, Summerbell himself was named the 2013 Modified Production Class 4 Champion. He won by a point and a half from Heath Causewell. His Total Lubricant teammate, Kyle Gregg, is in the running for the MP 2 title, while Alan Chen won the Thundersport 1 Championship.

"It was a challenging year for us. Despite the challenges, we were able to establish the fastest lap time of the year. But it was the many calls, excitement and passion on the people's faces that made us feel proud of a job well done," said Summerbell.

Although the anticipated clashes and rivalries did not live up to expectations, the meet was not without the usual spills and thrills. Rookie driver Kevin Chuck's car caught fire and the flames had to be extinguished by the marshals. There were a few minor on-track incidents, but no injuries.

Stalwarts such as Doug Gore, Alan Chen, Chris Campbell, Natasha Chang, Peter Rae, and Matthew Gore were among the drivers who excited the hundreds who turned out for the Heroes Day race meet.

The next Dover meet is tentatively scheduled for the Easter 2014 weekend.
