Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), the agency in charge of planning and marketing of the tourism industry, is prospecting for a new regional director for Western, Central, East and Southern Europe - a post based in Berlin, Germany. The new recruit will replace current regional director Patricia Samuels who has served the JTB for eight years in the post but is retiring in 2014.

The specific date of her retirement was not disclosed by the JTB.

Samuels is one of two persons employed to the JTB in Berlin, the other being support staff.

Europe stopovers

Year to date September, stopovers from Europe amounted to 174,225, up compared to 167,240 in 2012.

Director of Tourism John Lynch hopes to grow the market even more.

"We are working with the same budget but spending a bit smarter - working with the tour operators and airlines," Lynch told Sunday Business.

"We have new flights coming out of Germany and Moscow in Russia for the winter. The Spanish and Italian market is a little bit slow because of the economy," Lynch said.

The Berlin office's jurisdiction does not include the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Finland, and Norway.
