Strong turnout for JamWest drag meet

Well-populated stands with an enthusiastic crowd applauding the many thrills on the 1.8-mile track was the order of the meet last Sunday, according to the organisers, as a number of local and international drag racers went head-to-head at the JamWest Speedway in Little London, Westmoreland.

Track manager and event organiser Windsor Young reported that a large number of persons attended the meet and those present enjoyed every moment of the on-track action. His opinion was also echoed by assistant promotional manager Elle Johnson.

"The turnout was good, given the location. We had good reviews from the spectators," Johnson said. A battle among Peter Rae, Doug Gore, Andel Griffiths and Silbourne Clarke saw Peter Rae emerging the winner.

Young had previously pointed out that drag racers from Miami, such as Damon Chin and Damian McKenzie, would have been pitted against some of the Jamaica-based racers. However, there were a few complications.

"We had some cars from the United States, Damon Chin and Damian McKenzie. Their cars were overpowered, so they didn't do too good against the big guys down here. One of the cars also got out of control and hit a wall. Sometimes there were also little issues," Young said. The damage, according to Johnson, was minor.

The next JamWest Speedway meet is slated for the last Sunday in February 2014, and also promises to be big. Young, however, could not speak in definitive terms about what to expect.

"This next one, we're possibly expecting to have foreign racers also, other than Damon Chin and Damian McKenzie. We're a bit in limbo because there is a possibility that we're going to have circuits, but we'll know in a few weeks what exactly is going to take place," Young said.
