Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) recently won the Project Management Organisation of the Year Award (PMOY) presented by the Project Management Doctor Bird chapter. The company was recognised on International Project Management Day in November last year for successful implementation of the ISO 9001 Quality Management System designed to improve operational efficiency and productivity.

The judges gave the company top marks in the key areas of organisational maturity; project management training and development; use of tools and techniques; application of project management standards; and overall project performance.

Other top performers were the National Commercial Bank (NCB), first runner-up, for its AIDPS E-Statements project which was developed to improve cheque processing rates and decrease operational risk. NCB won the PMOY award in 2010 and 2011. Second runner-up was Neustone Limited for the construction of the 90,000 square foot Vistaprint Jamaica Service Centre in Montego Bay.

best practices

The coveted PMI Doctor Bird Chapter (DBC) Project Management Organisation of the Year Awards recognise companies that have transformed themselves and, by extension, the nation, through project management excellence. "These companies are to be commended for their discipline and adherence to best practices," said Craig Perue, president and chairman of PMI DBC.

A posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr Maurice Facey and received by his widow Valerie Facey. The citation read in part: "We celebrate and honour Dr Facey and his achievements which have inspired many, and can continue to inspire future generations of Jamaicans and project managers to aim for excellence, and see themselves and their work as having the potential for meaningful contribution to change and growth in Jamaica and the World."

Project Management Day is observed in several countries by chapters of the internationally recognised Project Management Institute, based in the United States. The Jamaica chapter annually marks the day with a ceremony which recognises locally operated companies for their use of best practices in project management.
